The officiant with a vocal past…
EJ Campfield and I first met at Big Lagoon State Park on April 26, 2008 at the wedding of Jennifer Hale to Frank Butera. It was during this first meeting that I was surprised at EJ’s ability to carry himself extremely professionally while maintaining a sort of understated grace. We chatted briefly about the requirements for sound, the timing, and other necessary details as we mic’d him for the upcoming ceremony. All was going wonderfully, the prelude music played quietly as the guests found their seats, Jennifer showed up right on time, and then…. we had a snag. It turns out that the groom, Frank, had left the rings sitting on the kitchen counter. A quick call to his neighbor, who broke into Frank’s house, and then a 45 minute drive to Big Lagoon State Park and the ceremony got under way.
It was during the wedding ceremony, that I realized EJ’s voice was clear and projected well. It was a little too clear and projected just a little too well for someone without professional training. I found out later, that he had received professional training when he worked for a southern California radio station as a DJ many years ago. But what stood out more than anything else, was that EJ really meant those words he was saying. The ceremony he performed touched me and the guests at the wedding. As the ceremony progressed, for many it was difficult to hold back their emotions as he talked about love and the commitment these two people were making to one another. And when it came time for the sand ceremony, when Frank and Jennifer couldn’t get the damp sand to come out of the small containers without banging repeatedly on the bottom, EJ maintained his professional demeanor as the guests erupted in laughter.
Since that wedding, we’ve worked with EJ many times. And every time we do, it’s like a breath of fresh air to work with someone of his calibur. He’s always attired professionally, ready to make the most of our client’s wedding ceremony, and a consummate gentleman. His dedication to our clients is phenomenal. And to be honest, after much searching and looking around, EJ was our first, last, and final choice to perform the ceremony for Sue and myself.
EJ claims his weddings are spirited without being spiritual and after seeing him in action – I agree completely. For anyone seeking an officiant for a secular wedding ceremony, particularly if you’re seeking an officiant that specializes in non-religious weddings, you simply cannot go wrong with EJ Campfield.
Here are a few photos of EJ in action.
